Become a Coach
We are always in need of volunteers to keep our program running. One of our most important roles for each season is coaching or helping to coach a team. If you are interested in coaching please read below about the requirements and reach out to us if you have any other questions.
What do I need to volunteer as a Coach or Assistant Coach?
Enjoy working with your child (and similar aged children)
Availability of about 1-4 hours a week to dedicate to the team
Be a good role model for the team - exhibit good communication skills, have an approachable personality, and demonstrate patience
Knows how to have fun!
Required Clearances (see below)
Grass Roots Training Course
What you don't need:
Played soccer (at any level)
Knowledge of soccer
Knowledge of drills, games, formations, etc. for use in the game of soccer
Don't I need to be a "soccer person" to coach soccer?
At the end of the day, there are materials on YouTube and available through Plum Area Soccer to help you become a better conceptual soccer coach. What we can't teach is the ability to interact with the players, parents, other coaches, etc. and the desire to give up your time to help mentor others. In other words, if you're willing to help (and able to get your clearances), we will do the rest and support your efforts to help make you a great soccer coach!
If you're concerned about doing "the right thing", reach out to our
Player and Coach Development Coordinator
for help
What clearances and how do I do that?
PAWest manages the list of clearances that are required and the process of submitting those clearances for approval. The information for that can be found at
https://www.pawest-soccer.org/coaching/risk-management/
(all clearances should be free to volunteers)
En leu of the FBI Fingerprints, most coaches are able to do the
Volunteer Qualification Affidavit
form. This form requires a notary which we have available to us at Plum Area Soccer. Reach out to
[email protected]
for assistance.
If you have questions or issues with clearances or the process, reach out to
[email protected]
or
[email protected]
.
What class do I have to take?
This is generally organized by the club and we try to get a class or two setup at Larry Mills Park. Reach out to your coordinator or our
Player and Coach Development Coordinator
for more details. These are Grassroots courses that teach you the fundamentals and techniques around being a good soccer coach. There are classes for the different teams you might need to coach:
4v4
,
7v7
,
9v9
, and
11v11
.
